RDPE Delivery in Natural England – The Gloucestershire Land Management Team: An Integrated Approach

Peter Holmes of Natural England has shared some of his thoughts on the integrated approach taken by the Gloucestershire Land Management Team.

The Natural England Team in Gloucestershire covers land management (AONB, SSSI, HLS, NNRs etc), land use (strategic planning, development control etc) , marine (Severn Estuary) and therefore take an joined-up approach to deliver.

Some of the benefits of this approach include:

  • It is efficient. Gloucestershire last year performed very highly, achieving all SSSI targets, and spending 50% over HLS budget (taking up regional slack). All from a very limited staff resource.
  • It is flexible. It allows opportunities to be taken and quick response to changing circumstances.
  • It moves seamlessly out into work with our partners. We have a very close working relationship with partners, based on a similar collaborative approach, and work with them on major projects and initiatives in the county - e.g. Farmland Birds, Severn Wetlands, Cotswold rivers, and a new project in the Forest of Dean.

The Gloucestershire team took this approach to deliver Integrated Local Delivery (ILD) model as developed by The Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG). More information about the FWAG ILD model is available here.
