Heritage Skills & Overnight Stays at Killhope

The project is to provide two 18ft Yurts, a three sided covered wooden catering shed, and internal furniture such as seating, and bedding and lighting. The applicant is Durham County Council who operates the Killhope lead mining museum at Cowshill in Upper Weardale, and who have managed the museum since 1984. A single Yurt was established in 2011 and the museum now wishes to expand this unusual provision in order to attract day visitors and other users to the museum and the area. The museum already engages with young people and families who have indicated their willingness to stay overnight in Yurt accommodation. Various events are planned to increase their take up, including a music festival and various family centred activities, in addition to those young people undertaking training in heritage skills, which is run in conjunction with the Princes Trust and other voluntary and community sector organisations.

Holding Pheasants

Holding Pheasants is an established family game farming business which rears and sells pheasant and partridge for use in the game shooting sector. RDPE funding was used to create a new business, supplying quality hatching eggs to local game bird hatcheries.

Most hatcheries produce their own eggs, but also rely on large quantities of third party supplies to supplement their own production or to fill shortfalls in productivity. Many of these eggs are imported from European countries; particularly France, and there is strong evidence to suggest that imports are associated with an increase in diseases. By providing their own quality hatching eggs, Holding Pheasants, has managed to reduce the number of imported eggs and therefore reduced the risk of disease.

Mersey Rural Leader provided Holding Pheasants with a grant of 10,616 and helped create 1 part time position.

Hope Draughting

Hope Draughting, provide a quality draughting & 3D modelling service to engineers, design consultants, installers & manufacturers, utilising the latest draughting, visualisation and point cloud software.

The business, located on a family farm, has recently rebuilt a redundant agricultural building, converting it into extra office space. Keen to maintain the Greenbelt environment, Hope Draughting has chosen to rebuild a barn-style building, with a timber frame clad in timber. As well as the construction of the building, RDPE funding has been used to fit ground source heat pumps for heating and cooling.

Funding has helped Hope Draughting increase its turnover and create an additional 3 full time positions.

Jacks Brow (Stanley Grange Business Village) Broadband

Stanley Grange Business Village, located within the gated walls of Knowsley Hall, offers a unique and professional environment in which to work. The site has been sympathetically converted from the Estate s range of Victorian brick built farm buildings into range of offices, each with its own kitchen and facilities, along with 24 hour gated access and 24 hour security.

In order to stay competitive and attract new tenants, Knowsley Estate, with the help of RDPE funding, has installed optical fibre to create a fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband link at Stanley Grange, thus offering speeds of 100mb.

The broadband project has increased broadband penetration in rural areas to an additional 10 businesses, and helped create an additional 12 full time positions.

Friendly Farmer

The Friendly Farmer project is all about establishing opportunities of mutual benefit for linking villages with their surrounding farms.

There are two elements to the project.

The first is to inform farmers of a range of activities that they can share with their communities. This will be achieved by using NFU, CLA, YFC and the Rural Hub who will help the project assemble a database from which farmer groups are created and taken to one of three demonstration farms.

The second element is to provide support for three farmers who are developing closer links with the village communities around them. These are Hill Top Farm (Hunningham), Feldon Forest Farm (Frankton) and Toft Farm (Kites Hardwick and Leamington Hastings).
